The Simple Joys of Countryside Living

Finding Gratitude in Everyday Moments

I feel incredibly grateful to live in the countryside. I get to spend time outdoors, take in the landscape, and notice the small details that can easily go unseen.

This morning, I went for a walk with my dog. I saw other dog owners, admired the scenery, and allowed myself to simply soak it all in. At lunchtime, I took another quick walk along the road, watching the birds and horses while feeling the sunshine on my face.

In the evening, while there was still daylight, I sat outside in the greenhouse we recently bought. It was amazing to watch the sunset and see all the beautiful orange colours appear. I often think that if I were living in the city, I might not notice or appreciate moments like this as much.

Eating What I Grow

One of the greatest joys of countryside living is being able to eat what I grow.

I harvested apples from one of our apple trees and made applesauce, which I’ll enjoy for breakfast tomorrow. For dinner, I made a sauce using tomatoes I had picked the day before. It was sweet and tangy at the same time—and incomparable to anything you can buy in a supermarket.

There is something deeply satisfying about growing food, harvesting it, and turning it into something delicious.

The Balance of Remote Work

Of course, countryside living also comes with sacrifices. Sometimes I miss working in an office and seeing people in person. Spending the day on Zoom calls and in front of a computer can feel isolating.

But remote work is also what has enabled me to live in the countryside and enjoy the lifestyle I want. Whenever I get the chance to go outside—especially in the mornings, evenings, or at weekends—I gain so much from being in nature that the sacrifice feels worthwhile.

When I travel to London for the day, I try to make the most of the opportunity by arranging to meet a friend or see colleagues face-to-face.

Feeling Grounded in Nature

At this stage of my life, the countryside brings me more benefits than city living. It helps me feel calm, grounded, and connected to myself.

I notice the seasons changing much more clearly. I look at the trees and understand more about nature. I notice migrating birds in spring, such as the swifts returning, and feel more aware of the natural world around me.

That connection makes me feel more in tune with who I am and who I want to be.

Helping Others Reconnect with Nature

Perhaps the next step in my career will be to find work that feels more connected to nature. It is something I would like to explore, although it is still early days.

Writing these articles is one way of exploring that possibility. I feel passionate about helping others become more connected with nature—perhaps by encouraging them to spend a little more time outdoors or make small changes in how they spend their time.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be writing more about my experiences in nature, with the hope of inspiring others to spend more time outside.

Maybe reconnecting with nature begins with something very simple: a walk, a sunset, a homegrown meal, or a moment spent noticing what is around us.
