Being near water has a unique ability to soothe my mind and rejuvenate my spirit. This morning I really did not feel like walking the dog but Whisky insisted, as he always does, so we ended up in Anton Lakes, a nature reserve near our home. The moment we arrived by the lake, I felt at peace. Observing the ducks as they went about their day, listening to the sound of flowing water, and watching its dark green hue were all elements of this soothing experience. In this blog post, we’ll explore why this happens and how we can make the most of our time by the water.

The Science Behind It

Research has shown that being near water can reduce stress and anxiety levels. The sound of flowing water, for instance, has a calming effect on the brain, promoting relaxation. This phenomenon is often referred to as "blue space," which is the term used to describe the positive impact of water on our mental health.

Studies indicate that spending time in blue spaces can lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. The visual beauty of water, combined with its soothing sounds, creates an environment that encourages mindfulness and presence, allowing us to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Benefits of Walking Near Water

Walking near water offers numerous benefits for both our physical and mental health. Here are a few key advantages:

  1. Improved Mood: The combination of fresh air, natural light, and the calming presence of water can elevate our mood. Many people report feeling happier and more relaxed after a walk by the water. This was something I experienced today as my mood shifted from feeling lazy to being grateful I had listened to my dog and got out of the door.

  2. Enhanced Creativity: Nature has a way of sparking creativity. The tranquil environment of a lakeside or riverside walk can help clear our minds, allowing new ideas to flow more freely. After today's walk I felt inspired to get back to blogging. My last post was mid-July. I gave up after being discouraged by statistics showing that very few people read my blog. I resolved to start again, as I find writing therapeutic.

  3. Physical Exercise: Walking is a great form of exercise, and doing it near water can make it more enjoyable. The scenic views and fresh air can motivate us to walk longer distances. The ducks were a highlight today. I had to keep an eye on Whisky who was a bit spooked by the volume of them.

  4. Connection to Nature: Being near water fosters a connection to nature, which is essential for our wellbeing. This connection can lead to a greater appreciation for the environment and a desire to protect it. Since moving to the countryside I can really relate to this. As I spend more time in nature, I appreciate how important it is and do my best to protect it.

How to Incorporate Water Walks into Your Routine

I live far from the sea, which is my preferred way to enjoy water. However, we don't need to reside near the sea to benefit from the wellness properties of water. Here are some practical tips:

  • Find Local Water Spots: Research nearby lakes, rivers, or beaches where you can take regular walks. Even urban areas often have parks with water features. For example, when I lived in London one of my favourite pastimes was running along the Thames Path and sitting by the Serpentine in Hyde Park.

  • Schedule Regular Walks: Set aside time each week to visit your chosen water spot. With Whisky we go every Sunday morning to Anton Lakes. He expects it so even if I am not in the mood, I'll be nudged!

  • Mindful Walking: While walking, focus on the sounds of the water, the feel of the breeze, and the beauty around you. This mindfulness practice can enhance the calming effects of your walk. Today I stopped by a small pontoon which gives a great view of the Anton lake. I took a minute to take it all in, the sound, the ducks, the colour of the water, the people that were also enjoying the lake. This helped me increase my appreciation for taking the time to be there.

  • Bring a Friend: Invite a friend to join you - fur friends also count! Sharing the experience can make it even more enjoyable and provide an opportunity for meaningful conversations. I am a mad person and also talk to my dog during walks.

Walking near water is a simple yet powerful way to enhance our wellbeing. The calming effects of water, combined with the benefits of physical activity and a connection to nature, create a holistic approach to improving our mental and physical health. So, lace up your shoes, find a nearby water source, and take a stroll. Your mind and body will thank you!
